Choosing your mattress, pillow and sleep posture are crucial to good health. One of best positions for sleeping is on your side with a pillow between your knees and your knees stacked one on top of the other. You need to have the right pillow under your head while in the sidelying position so keep reading.
It’s difficult to find the right pillow! I have literally spent years and hundreds of dollars searching. One time, I spent a hundred dollars on a pillow that was too soft and did not provide enough support. I’ve heard many frustrating stories from patients who wasted money on something that impacts their health so much.
One tip is to measure the distance from the side of your neck to widest part of your shoulder and pick a pillow of equal height. It should be firm enough to not collapse under the weight of your head. Remember that your head weighs approximately 9% of your body weight.
The biggest mistake people make is sleeping with a pillow that’s too low so their head drops down towards the bed. Your shoulders then are not aligned and your ribcage twists in an attempt to get the head in contact with the pillow. This rotation can be transmitted all the way into your low back and will unstack your knees. When you find the right pillow can impact all the way down to your pelvis!
